Part 1: Discovering Me

This week, get a sneak peek of Discovering Me, part one of The Science of Happiness Program.

Discovering Me

Knowing who you are, your likes and dislikes are a great part of The Science of Happiness. Happiness is a state of mind. Happiness is a feeling you can tap into by simply thinking of a time you shared with friends or a time you helped someone in your community and how they expressed their gratitude towards you. If you think back on the experiences that made you the happiest, you’ll find that those times may not have included a lot of things. Those happy times or moments were made up of experiences, not things. Although people believe that things will make them happy, on this journey you will soon find out that things are simply just things. Things certainly allow us to have many modern conveniences in life, but in the end, they are simply materialistic objects that break, get lost or cannot provide the true meaning of happiness.

Step 1- Self-Awareness - Ask yourself who are you?* Take some time to get to know the real you; not the person you allow others to see to make them happy... Not the person you pretend to be when you hide behind a mask. Find out who you really are, the things you like, dislike and why.

Using your stickers:

a. Use the “Discovering Me” sticker and place it on page 3 of your journal.

b. Set aside at least 10 minutes (or longer) to write down your thoughts about who you think you really are.

c. On the next few pages of your journal, place each title sticker in sequential order as seen below. Spend a few minutes each day of the week writing about each title using your picture stickers to prompt your writing.

1. Who am I?

2. About my family…

3. Things I like…

4. Things I dislike…

5. My friends…

6. My environment…

7. Things I question…

Step 2- Using your Science of Happiness Journal for this journey (these thought provoking prompts will help you on scripting ideas along your discovery*). Begin taking notes about your family, friends and other people in your life and how you feel when you’re around them. This is how you will discover more about yourself and why you do what you do.

Using your stickers:

a. Use the “Discovering my feelings” sticker and place these titles on the next few pages of your journal.

b. Set aside 15 minutes to write down your thoughts about how you feel.

c. On the next few pages of your journal, place each title sticker in sequential order as seen below. Spend a few minutes each day of the week writing about each title using your picture stickers to prompt your writing.

1. When I am with my family, I feel…

2. When I am around friends, I feel…

3. When I am in a room with strangers, I feel…

*Getting in touch with your feelings takes courage in knowing yourself. Recognizing your feelings and embracing them will help you understand the real you (although scary at times) and can lead to self-awareness, mindfulness and happiness.
